Before and After-Care Advice for the Waxing Client

What is Waxing?
Waxing will remove the hair from the root. You would achieve smooth, silky, hairless body area. The results usually last for 2 – 3 weeks, depending on your hair-growth and the weather (usually in hot weather, hair grows quicker). Any part of the body can be waxed.

Preparation for Waxing
• Do not apply any body lotion / deodorant to the area to be waxed.
• If you have a sunburn, you cannot wax that area.
• If you are on some medication – you would need to discuss it with the therapist, as in some cases waxing cannot be done. For more information on this, read my article What your Esthetician Needs to Know Prior to Waxing.
• Exfoliate regularly in between waxing sessions, and exfoliate 24 hours before your treatment.
• The hair growth has to be approximately 1 cm long if previously waxed. If the last time the hair was shaved or a depilatory cream was used, then the hair has to be approximately 1 ½ cm long.

Waxing
A warm sticky film is applied over the skin, then a paper strip is placed on top and removed quickly. At times a different wax is used – the wax is applied to the skin, it hardens and is removed by hand without the use of the paper strip. Afterwards a soothing lotion is applied, and a sunscreen on top, especially to the face and other areas which will be exposed to the sun e.g. the arms in summer.

Once Leaving the Salon
• You can take a shower – but use a non-perfumed shower-gel.
• Apply a soothing moisturizer (non-perfumed and without alcohol). Aloe Vera is an excellent ingredient to look out for in your soothing moisturizer.
• Don’t go sunbathing for the next 24 hours.
• Don’t go swimming (sea or pool) for the next 24 hours.
• Don’t go on a sandy beach (even at night) for the next 24 hours.
• Don’t wear jeans or any skinny pants.
• Don’t exfoliate for 2 – 3 days.
• Apply sunscreen religiously, the whole body, but with extra diligence to the area that has been waxed.
For a more detailed explanation why you can’t go swimming, wear tight jeans, shave between waxing sessions, read my article The Ins and Outs of Waxing.

Maintaining your Results
• Exfoliate regularly, every 3 days – either using an exfoliating product, or a body brush.
• Do not shave or use depilatory creams in between waxing sessions.
