Not so long ago, if a client of mine had asked me what she or he can do with regards to his or her acne scars, my reply would have been ‘nothing’!
A Big No No to Chemical Peels and Laser Resurfacing
Some people used to resort to Chemical Peels or Laser Resurfacing to help with their acne scarring. However, these kind of treatments are too harsh exfoliants. They literally remove layers from your skin, and if one had to go too deep, then there might be significant dangers to bacterial infections, viral infections and post-inflammatory scarring, plus the down-time that is needed to heal before going in the sun. Not to mention that in the long-term these kind of treatments make the skin worse. You will regret it 6 years down the line.
Apart from removing the epidermis (top layers of the skin – millimetres thick), you will also have the junction (dermal papillae – rete pegs) between the top skin (epidermis) and the bottom skin (dermis) removed. Then once the new skin grows back, this junction which previously was wavy to have the 2 ‘skins’ ‘interlocking’, won’t exist anymore. You will end up with 2 skins sitting flat on top of each other, which would eventually result in the top layers (epidermis) sliding off the bottom layers (dermis) – hence you will end up with sagging skin and premature ageing.
I personally would never recommend these treatments to anyone. However, there is good news for treating acne scarring!!!
Medical Needling
Dr Des Fernandes the founder of Environ has pioneered a treatment that is called Medical Needling – sometimes it is also referred to as Medical Rolling.
This is an excellent solution:
*you will get great results for your acne scars (it’s also used as an anti-ageing treatment as it promotes the production of collagen)
*and most importantly it is not invasive – it is safe and there is no downtime.
Medical Needling is done with a special roller that has up to 200 tiny stainless steel needles, each 1mm in length (there is a 3mm one which would then penetrate deeper and it is actually referred to as Surgical Needling). The practitioner will glide the roller over the face (under anaesthetic) – which would in turn create puncture wounds in the skin. This will promote the skin to start producing collagen in these tiny channels that were created by the roller. And what makes this treatment so amazing, is that it is very safe when conducted correctly, it heals quickly and most importantly is that it preserves an intact upper skin (epidermis). Hence you are protecting the delicate skin, and actually promoting the production and thickening of a healthier skin.
Vitamin A
To be fair and to say it all. Dr Des Fernandes who pioneered this treatment, and who is the founder of Environ Skin Care, designed Medical Needling to be used in conjunction with specially formulated creams, namely Vitamin A, so that specific cells can be targeted for maximum therapeutic effect. In fact, the use of Environ Skin Care, which contains a high level of Vitamin A is recommended for a number of weeks prior to commencing any Medical Needling, to prepare the skin and make the skin healthy. Like this, the skin can heal better, and the effectiveness of the treatment is increased drastically.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of companies out there, who after realizing the ingenuity of this treatment, they started copying these rollers and performing the treatment. However, without the prescribed Vitamin A products, the results achieved are disappointing, when compared to what you can achieve with Medical Needling AND Environ Vitamin A products.
Programme Plan
Each client is different, so a programme plan is designed according to his or her needs, concerns and skin’s health. Usually a series of 6 treatments 3 to 4 weeks apart is prescribed. However, it all depends on the practitioner, and the client’s case.
Real People … Real Results
Here is a client who had had Medical Needling done. This photo is only taken 3 sessions into her treatment plan. But already one can see a drastic improvement. I couldn’t find one with acne scars, but I chose this one, as her wrinkles looking similar and deep as some acne scars would be. It is worth mentioning again that these results are achieved in combination with Environ Skin Care.
Treatment Explained… in Video
